What Could They Possibly Have Been Listening To?

Jerry and I were talking the other day about songs that make reference to other songs or artists, and I know that there are a bunch of them, but I wanted to put together a short list of 10.  Why?  I’m not really sure, but I’ve always been interested in what particluar musicians listen to and are influenced by, and what they’ll make musical reference to in their own music.

  1. Cheap Trick – “Surrender” – Artist reference:  Kiss
  2. Mott The Hoople – “All the Young Dudes” – Artist references:  T-Rex, The Beatles, The Roling Stones
  3. Deep Purple – “Smoke on the Water” – Artist reference:  Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
  4. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Sweet Home Alabama” – Artist reference:  Neil Youg
  5. Grateful Dead – “Stagger Lee” – Song reference:  “Nearer My God To Thee”
  6. Steely Dan – “Everything You Did” – Artist reference:  The Eagles
  7. Led Zeppelin – “The Crunge” – Artist reference:  James Brown
  8. Tom Petty – “Runnin’ Down a Dream” – Artist/Song reference:  Del Shannon/”Runaway”
  9. The Beatles – “Glass Onion” – Artist/Song references:  Paul McCartney/”I am the Walrus”, “Strawberry Fields”, “Fool on the Hill”, “Fixing a Hole”
  10. Don McLean – “American Pie” – Artist references:  Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones

Thanks to Jerry for helping me get the last couple, but I wanted to see if any readers out there could come up with more.  Like I said, there are a bunch of them…

Proving once again that we do more than just show you the best deals in the Phoenix real estate market; we show you how to get the most out of living in Arizona, and try to help you get the most out of what you are listening to.  Please comment and let us know if you have more to add to the list.
