World’s first global musical instrument museum

I was driving in the desert ridge area the other day, and saw a sign indicating the future site of a musical instrument museum.  Located at the corner of Tatum boulevard and Mayo boulevard, the 75,000 square foot facility which should open up in 2010 will house instruments from all over the world.  I think it’s a great idea, and don’t really understand why someone hasn’t already done it.

It’s an interesting concept that, as the website explains, will contain 200 – 250 instrument displays, each with a separate audio feed so that, when you approach the display, you hear the sound of that instrument on the wireless headphones supplied to you by the museum.  Every country will be represented, and some larger countries will be represented more than once.

I love the concept of the museum, but as someone who makes his living selling Phoenix real estate, I like why they decided on the Valley:  It is “fast growing, diverse and young, affluent and well educated, and a popular tourist destination.”  I think this is a good start for some other attractions to come.
